Neck pains should be taken seriously. Studies have shown that frequent neck paints can arise from several medical conditions such as degenerative disk disease, tuberculosis, meningitis, osteomyelitis and septic discitis. Neck pains can occur to anyone, from a person who sits in the office for long hours to those that are involved in sports where contact is regular, such as wrestling. You may also be prone to neck pains if you have suffered injuries in motor vehicle accidents.
If neck pains are left untreated, it can cause the constant pinching of nerves in the neck area which will eventually lead to life affecting problems such as headaches, arm numbness, loss of strength, dizziness and lower back pain. Neck pains, in most cases, will disappear after a few days of rest.
However, if you have a stubborn neck pain which will not go away, we propose one of these following remedies to cure that pesky problem :-
A change of pillow
Sleep deprivation can cause neck pains as the body requires a good nights’ rest in order for the cells and muscles in your body (including your neck) to regenerate and heal. Sleep deprivation can be caused by many factors, such as stress. But more often than not a person finds himself or herself awake in the middle of the night because of an unsuitable and uncomfortable pillow. There is an easy fix to this problem as all you have to do is change your pillow to suit your sleeping style.
If you are someone who sits in front of the computer for many hours in a day, take a 5 minutes break every hour or so to perform some simple stretching exercises. All you have to do is roll your shoulders backwards and upwards for about 30 seconds, then slowly tilt your head to the left and right until you feel that your neck muscles are relaxed. This simple exercise will help release the tension in your neck muscles.
Hot and cold towels
You can use hot and cold towels, or any hot and cold gel packs that you can easily find in your local pharmacy store to ease your pains. Alternate between the towels or the packs, leaving them on that painful location on your neck for at least 20 minutes each. The coldness will decrease inflammation whereas the heat will relax the tightened muscles.
A simple neck massage from your local professional massage parlour helps with neck stiffness and pains. Exerting pressure on that painful neck will help relax the muscles as well as reducing swelling and tightness.
Natural Herbs and Essential Oils
You can use certain herbs such as menthol, rosemary or lavender to help soothe those tight neck muscles. Rub it on your skin or add a few drops of your preferred herbs to your diffuser (if you have one), close your eyes and relax! These natural stress relievers work wonders.
Acupuncture has become extremely popular nowadays with the increase in demand of Chinese medication. We have been told by many people that this treatment is extremely helpful to cure neck pains. A word of caution: this is not recommended if you fear needles.
If problems persist after trying the above methods, we suggest that you seek immediate medical attention. You may be required to undergo an x-ray and or MRI examination in order for the medical officer to determine the cause of the persistent neck pains. Physiotherapy is a common form of treatment prescribed by the doctors, though cost may pose a problem if you are not medically insured.
